The Convocation and Merit Day Ceremony – 2026 of the School of Data Analytics and the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, was held on 31 July 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Convergence Academia Complex. The programmecelebrated the academic achievements of the graduating students in the presence of distinguished dignitaries, faculty members, parents, and students.
The ceremony commenced with a prayer song, followed by the Welcome Address by Prof. Dr. Ancy Joseph, Coordinator, School of Data Analytics. She warmly welcomed the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, dignitaries, faculty members, parents, and students. In her address, she emphasized the importance of unity, harmony, and mutual respect among graduates, encouraging them to remain connected with one another and uphold the values of their alma mater throughout their lives.
The Introductory Address was delivered by Prof. Dr. K. K. Jose, Director, School of Data Analytics and School of Mathematics and Statistics. He highlighted the academic facilities and opportunities available at Mahatma Gandhi University and acknowledged the significant contributions and visionary leadership of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor in strengthening the University’s academic ecosystem. He also spoke about the growing importance of data in today’s world, explaining that data science is closely connected to human life and plays a vital role in addressing real-world challenges and improving society.
The ceremony was formally inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Mavoothu D., Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University. In his inaugural address, he explained that mathematical thinking begins in everyday life, describing a mother as the first mathematicianin everyone’s who naturally applies mathematical concepts while preparing food, such as deciding the number of dosas to make for the family. He encouraged students to adopt both analytical (linear) and holistic approaches when making decisions. Stressing that many people fail to recognize the true power of mathematics, he urged graduates not to use their degrees merely for personal gain but to contribute to society. He also highlighted the role of Big Data and shared his vision of integrating the University’s activities into a unified digital system.
The Presidential Address was delivered by Prof. Dr. K. Jaichandran, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, who encouraged graduates to pursue excellence with integrity, innovation, and lifelong learning.
The highlight of the ceremony was the distribution of degree certificates, medals, and awards, recognizing the outstanding academic achievements of the graduating students. The awardees were applauded for their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to academic excellence.
The Convocation Address was delivered by Dr. Sreejith C. M., Controller of Examinations. He reflected on how scientific discoveries and technological advancements, though created with noble intentions, can be misused. Referring to the atomic bomb developed during the Manhattan Project and its devastating use in Hiroshima, he reminded students of the ethical responsibility that accompanies knowledge. He urged graduates to live by strong moral values, make the best use of the opportunities and facilities provided by the University, and contribute positively to society. His address was enriched with inspiring personal anecdotes and local stories that conveyed valuable life lessons.
The ceremony was further enriched by the felicitation addresses of Prof. Dr. R. Sreekumar, Head, School of Mathematics and Asst Professor Dr. Sharon Susan Jacob. Both of them congratulated the graduates, shared their experiences, encouraged lifelong learning, and wished them successful careers.
An emotional highlight of the ceremony was the Words of Gratitude shared by the student representatives of the School of Data Analytics and the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Reflecting on their two-year academic journey, they spoke about the invaluable experiences they gained at Mahatma Gandhi University. They expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Director, faculty members, and mentors for their constant guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support. They also encouraged their juniors to make the best use of the guidance provided by their teachers and undertake meaningful, high-quality projects.
Another touching moment was the Words of Gratitude delivered by Asst.ProfessorMrs.Abseena Habeeb . class in charge of the outgoing batch of the School of Data Analytics. She reminisced about her journey with the students, appreciated their academic and personal growth, congratulated them on their achievements, and wished them every success in their future endeavours.
The event concluded with words of gratitude from the student and parent representatives, followed by the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Aiswarya Ramachandran, Student Representative. The formal proceedings concluded with a vibrant cultural programme, making the Convocation and Merit Day Ceremony a memorable celebration of academic excellence, achievement, and new beginnings for the graduating students
