The Induction Programme for the First Semester students of the School of Data Analytics (SDA) and the School of Mathematics and Statistics (SMS), Mahatma Gandhi University, was conducted successfully in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The programme marked the beginning of a new academic journey for the incoming students and aimed to familiarize them with the academic environment, faculty, and opportunities available at the University.

The programme commenced with the Master of Ceremonies extending a cordial welcome to the distinguished dignitaries, faculty members, parents, guests, and the newly admitted students. The gathering began by invoking the blessings of the Almighty through a prayer, setting a positive and meaningful tone for the event.
In her Welcome Address, Prof. Dr. Ancy Joseph, Coordinator of the School of Data Analytics, warmly welcomed the dignitaries, parents, faculty members, and newly admitted students. She encouraged the students to strive for excellence in their academic and personal lives, emphasizing that education is a transformative journey. She spoke about the importance of embracing change, developing new skills, and adapting to the rapidly evolving world. She inspired the students to view their time at the University as an opportunity for growth, transformation, innovation, and lifelong learning, motivating them to become competent professionals and responsible citizens who can make meaningful contributions to society.

The Inaugural Address was delivered by Prof. Dr. K. K. Jose, Director, School of Data Analytics and School of Mathematics and Statistics. In his inaugural address, Prof. Dr. K. K. Jose delivered an inspiring and motivating speech to the newly admitted students. He emphasized the importance of higher education and encouraged them to make the best use of the opportunities available at the University. He stressed the values of discipline, punctuality, regular attendance, and responsible behaviour, reminding students that these qualities are essential for academic success and personal growth. He also advised students to adapt to campus life, overcome homesickness, and actively participate in academic and extracurricular activities. Highlighting the University’s excellent infrastructure, modern facilities, well-equipped labs and libraries, and diverse academic resources, he motivated the students to make full use of these facilities. He also introduced them to the various Schools and academic programmes offered by Mahatma Gandhi University, encouraging interdisciplinary learning and a spirit of curiosity and innovation throughout their academic journey.

In introduced the students to the concept of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), explaining that the University’s academic approach focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for both higher studies and professional careers. He encouraged the students to consider knowledge as an ocean and inspired them to cultivate the habit of continuous reading, exploration, and self-learning beyond the classroom. Stressing the importance of academic projects, he advised the students to make their final-semester project a meaningful learning experience by applying the concepts they acquire during the course. He also shared insights into the global growth of Data Science, referring to the pioneering work of leading institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and discussing how Data Science emerged as a distinct academic discipline in the early 2010s. Through these examples, he motivated the students to stay updated with emerging technologies and prepare themselves for the rapidly evolving world of data and innovation

In his Induction Address, Dr. R. Sreekumar, Coordinator of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, encouraged the students to approach their education with dedication, perseverance, and a strong sense of purpose. He emphasized that success is achieved through consistent effort and commitment. He advised students to understand the needs of society and the community, stressing that education should prepare them to contribute meaningfully to addressing real-world challenges. He also highlighted the importance of designing learning experiences that remain relevant to the changing needs of society. Furthermore, he spoke about the valuable role of parents in supporting students throughout their academic journey and discussed the generation gap that often exists between parents, teachers, and students. He encouraged mutual understanding, cooperation, and effective communication among all stakeholders, emphasizing that such collaboration is essential for the holistic development of students and for building a better future.



The programme continued with the Felicitation Addresses. Prof. Tony Thomas, Professor, School of Mathematics and Statistics, shared valuable insights from his academic experience and encouraged the students to remain curious, dedicated, and confident throughout their academic journey. He explained the importance of interdisciplinary learning and motivated the students to explore knowledge beyond their core discipline through Open Courses and other interdisciplinary programmes. He emphasized that learning across different fields broadens one’s perspective, enhances creativity, and prepares students to meet the demands of an ever-changing world. Quoting the inspiring words, “I am seeing further because I stand on the shoulders of giants,” he reminded the students that every achievement is built upon the knowledge, guidance, and contributions of those who came before us. He encouraged them to value their teachers, continue learning with curiosity, and strive for excellence throughout their academic journey.



Dr. Sharon Susan Jacob, Assistant Professor, School of Data Analytics, felicitated the gathering and inspired the students to embrace new learning experiences, develop analytical thinking, and actively engage in research and innovation.


Dr. K. R. Jaymol, Professor, School of Mathematics and Statistics, also addressed the gathering. She encouraged the students to cultivate discipline, perseverance, and a positive attitude while pursuing their studies and highlighted the importance of lifelong learning. Shehighlighted the timeless values of education by referring to the ancient Gurukula tradition. He explained that, in the Gurukula system, learning was not always imparted through direct instruction. At times, the guru remained silent, encouraging students to observe, reflect, and discover knowledge on their own. Through this example, he emphasized that true learning extends beyond classroom lectures and requires curiosity, self-discipline, observation, and independent thinking. She encouraged the students to cultivate these qualities throughout their academic journey and to become lifelong learners who seek knowledge with dedication and sincerity.
As part of the programme, a few senior students from the School of Data Analytics and the school of Mathematics and Statistics shared their academic experiences and journey at the University. They spoke about the learning opportunities, supportive faculty, campus environment, academic activities, and extracurricular experiences that had contributed to their personal and professional growth. Their interaction provided valuable insights and encouragement to the newly admitted students, helping them gain confidence as they began their academic journey.



An orientation and induction session was also conducted to familiarize the first-semester students with the academic system, curriculum structure, University regulations, available facilities, and student support services. The session enabled the students to better understand the expectations of the programme and prepared them for a smooth transition into university life.



The Induction Programme concluded on a positive and inspiring note. It provided the newly admitted students with an opportunity to become acquainted with the University’s academic culture, values, and expectations. The programme instilled confidence and enthusiasm among the students as they embarked on their academic journey at Mahatma Gandhi University. The event served as a meaningful beginning to their higher education and reflected the University’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and holistic student development.
